U.S. cyclocross racer Dombroski killed in Belgium

The international cycling community was shocked and saddened by the death of U.S. racer Amy Dombroski on Thursday.  The Vermont native who raced for the Young Telenet-Fidea team was struck and killed by a truck while being motor-paced during a training session in Sainte-Catherine-Waver, Belgium.

“It is terrible, terrible news,” Corné Lepoeter, president of team Telenet-Fidea, told VeloNews. “We are all so sad. … We don’t know anything more. We just get the news.”

Dombroski, 26, turned heads as an under-23 rider, winning U.S. national titles in cyclocross, road and cross country events. She was a top-10 contender on the cyclocross World-Cup circuit along with the Superprestige series.

She competed on teams Webcor Builders, Velo Bella-Kona, Schlamm presented by Primus Mootry and Luna Pro Team.

She made the decision to compete in cyclocross full-time two years ago and joined the Crankbrothers Race Club followed by the Young Telenet-Fidea Cycling Team, splitting her cyclocross season between world-class events in the U.S. and Belgium.

She kicked off her 2013-14 cyclocross season at UCI-sanctioned events CrossVegas in Las Vegas two weeks ago followed by the Grand Prix of Gloucester in Massachusetts last weekend. She was expected to start her season over in Europe following the Telenet-Fidea team presentation this week.
