Maghalie Rochette wins Pan-American U23 championship

Maghalie Rochette

Canadian Maghalie Rochette (Luna) wrapped up her Cincy3 weekend by winning the U23 women’s Pan-American championship Sunday in Devou Park, Covington, Kentucky. In the elite women’s race Rochette’s teammate Catharine Pendrel, third in Saturday’s Kings After Dark race in Mason, Ohio, placed fifth. Geoff Kabush (Scott-3x) missed out on the elite men’s podium by coming fourth, his best placing of the weekend.

Rochette took silver in both the Canadian national championships and Friday’s first Cincy3 race in Harbin Park, Farfield, Ohio. On Sunday she prevailed over Americans Alison Arensman (PainPathways) and Laurel Rathbun (Raleigh-Clement).

Katherine Compton (USA/Trek) dominated the women’s elite race after being thwarted by mechanicals in the first two races. Compton, USA champion for ten consecutive years, didn’t make the hole shot, but she quickly rolled clear with Georgia Gould (USA/Luna). Pendrel was scrapping with Meredith Miller (Noosa) and Kaitlin Antonneau (Twenty16) to catch Gould, but it was Miller who made the catch and outsprinted Gould for silver.

James Driscoll (USA/Raleigh-Clement) must have been relieved to win the Pan-American championship and stand on the top step after a second on Friday and third on Saturday. Driscoll had to bring back early leader Cameron Dodge with Friday’s winner Danny Summerhill (K-Edge/Felt). Summerhill flatted after the infamous Wall and Driscoll staved off his Belgian teammate Ben Berden for the victory. Dodge took the bronze.
