Social media debate ensues on whether officer should have been using bike lane

A heated argument on the Spanish Canary Island of Tenerife between a cyclist and motortist resulted in the driver of a white van taking a run at the cyclist. A video of the confrontation which took place in the municipality of Sanat Cruz was posted on the Islas Canarias Facebook page with a lengthy debate ensueing on the social media site.

After directing the vehicle and attempting to drive into the cyclist, the cyclist who appears to have avoided being hit reaches into his back pocket and according to the description reveals himself to be a police officer showing his badge. The driver of the van pulls to the side of the road as the cyclist pulls up next to him.

The ensueing debate on the social media site mainly in Spanish focuses on whether the cyclist should have been riding in a bike lane on the other side of the road. The driver appears to have upset at the cyclist for impeding traffic by his decision to ride on the road which many point out in no way justifies his dangerous behavior. Some on social media say he should have been in the bike lane while others say that bike lanes aren’t mandatory so he had a right to be using the road.
