2015 Vuelta a España Stage 5: Duchesne escapes, Ewan wins, Dumoulin wears red

Young Australian Caleb Ewan (Orica-GreenEdge) announced his arrival via a huge win on Wednesday’s uphill sprint after a good set up from his team. The 21-year-old beat John Degenkolb (Germany/Giant-Alpecin) and points leader Peter Sagan (Slovakia/Tinkoff-Saxo) in a stiff pull to the line. Ewan’s Colombian teammate Esteban Chaves lost the race lead to Degenkolb’s Dutch teammate Tom Dumoulin on the difficult finish.

Canadian Antoine “Tony the Tiger” Duchesne (Europcar) joined Lampre’s Ethiopian rider Tsgabu Grmay and Iljo Keisse (Belgium/Etixx-QuickStep) in a futile breakaway on a flat course with a ripple near the finish kick-up in Alcalá de Guadaíra. It was another hot day of salt-crusted kits and empty bidons pinging from the peloton like hot fleas.

Duchesne wasn’t the only Canadian pro making news: Trek Factory Racing announced that Ryder Hesjedal would be joining their squad in 2016.

Giant-Alpecin, hoping to score Degenkolb’s 10th Vuelta stage win, drove the pack inexorably closer to the trio. Duchesne attacked his breakmates with 22-km remaining and a 2:10 gap over the yellow jersey group. Keisse did all the work to haul back the Canadian, and the Belgian bolted after the junction.

Tinkoff-Saxo pulled the peloton at the 15-km to go banner while Keisse time-trialed his way towards Alcalá de Guadaíra 1:15 up the road. The group swallowed the lone Belgian at the 8.7-km go mark. The wide roads outside the city made for a many-headed peloton. Orica was very interested in putting Ewan in a superior spot.

The roads narrowed and finally the straight rise began. Ewan was delivered to Degenkolb’s rear tire and powered past the German in the final 50-metres, the German and Slovakian fading.

Thursday’s stage sees a return to medium mountains, with a Cat. 3 ascent of the Alto de Cazorla concluding a rolling 200-km day.
