2023 UCI road and track worlds Day 6 recap

With no road racing on the schedule, today was all about the track for Canada at the UCI road and track worlds in Glasgow and with medals on the line, Canada came through with some stellar performances.

Kelsey Mitchell and Laurianne Genest both qualified through to Wednesdays’ 1/8th final in the elite women’s sprint. The depth of the women’s sprint has grown dramatically since Tokyo 2020 so even for Mitchell, the current Olympic sprint champion, just qualifying through is no easy task.

It was a great moment to see Keely Shaw take the silver medal in the women’s C4 individual pursuit with Mel Pemble taking a bronze in the women’s C3 500m time trial. The combining of the para track events with the elite events has elevated the exposure of this talented group of athletes which will only help to grow the sport into the future.

Canada’s Dylan Bibic looked to rebound after the previous night’s omnium performance in the men’s elimination Race. Bibic has proven he has the skill set for the elimination, and tonight he let it all on the line in front of another packed house at the Chris Hoy Velodrome.

The last two standing were Bibic and Great Britain’s Ethan Vernon, who had just been caught in a crash with the Netherlands’ Matthijs Buchli. Adrenaline from the crash and the hometown crowd on his side helped lift Vernon to victory, with Bibic taking a very well-deserved silver.

On Wednesday, racing is back on the track with the women’s elite sprint 1/8 finals, the men’s elite 1 km time trial, mixed C team sprint, women’s C3 scratch race, men’s elite Keirin, men’s madison and the women’s points race.
