Esports racer Luca Zanasca, who previously had a career as a professional cyclist at the Continental level, has tested positive for the banned steroid Stanozolol, according to the National Anti-Doping Tribunal (NADO). Zanasca, who transitioned from pro cycling to esports racing, represented Italy at the 2023 esports world championships, where he finished 57th.

Unclear when test performed

The statement from NADO does not specify when the drug tests were conducted but indicates, “The National Anti-Doping Tribunal, in acceptance of the request proposed by the National Anti-Doping Prosecutor’s Office, has proceeded to suspend the athlete Luca Zanasca, a member of the Federazione Ciclistica Italiana (FCI), for the violation of articles 2.1 and 2.2 (substance found: Stanozolol and its metabolites). The drug test was arranged by NADO Italia.”

No longer welcome at virtual events

In response to the suspension, Zwift Team Italy’s managers Niccolo Martinoli and Alessio Caggiula posted a statement, saying, “In light of the recent precautionary suspension of athlete Luca Zanasca by the National Anti-Doping Tribunal, our organization wishes to announce that Mr. Zanasca will no longer participate in any virtual cycling events we host and/or participate. This decision is effective immediately and pertains solely to activities conducted on the Zwift platform, which is our exclusive venue for organizing virtual cycling events.”
