Friday’s Tour de Suisse stage neutralized in memory of Gino Mäder

The Tour de Suisse announced that Friday’s sixth stage would be neutralized in memory of Gino Mäder, the Swiss rider from Bahrain-Victorious who died from injuries suffered in a crash on Thursday’s stage.

Before Mäder’s team announced his passing, the organizers had already shortened Stage 6 due to landslides. The news of the 26 year old’s death led the organizers to neutralize the race, with the peloton riding the final 20 km into Oberwil-Lieli together in an homage to Mäder.

At this point, with the cycling world shaken by the news, it’s difficult to see how his Bahrain-Victorious team will go on in this stage race, or even if the final two days will be raced. If the race continues on Saturday, it will be with an 183-km route from Tübach to Weinfelden.

One of Mäder’s three professional wins came at his home tour in 2021 when he beat Michael Woods to the line in Andermatt.
