Peter Sagan smoked a fat cigar on the Champs-Élysées like an absolute legend

The cycling world will miss Peter Sagan. The triple world champion has had an incredible career, with wins some of the biggest one-day races like Paris-Roubaix, Tour of Flanders, Gent–Wevelgem, and even back here at the Grand Prix Cyclistes de Montréal and the Grand Prix Cycliste de Québec.

He rode 12 Tours de France, which included seven green jerseys and 12 stage wins. Sagan is also one the great characters of the pro peloton, with his flair and panache, whether it’s his victory salutes or wheelies for the fans. But life moves forward, and all great things must come to an end.

Sagan will hang up the pro road cleats at the end of 2023, but will still compete on the MTB circuit in 2024, making the Paris Olympics a priority.

“I’m grateful for what I have achieved. I feel that I’ve had some incredible results. But I’ve sacrificed a lot for this,” he said. “To keep sacrificing myself year after year, I can’t do that any more. It’s time to turn the page.”

Although his final Tour de France wasn’t quite as remarkable as some of his earlier ones–he finished 127th overall, 54th in the points competition, he still made it to Paris with class. And to celebrate his last trip to the finish line, the Slovakian had a stogie afterwards.
