The final time trial of the Giro d’Italia was full of drama. The important 18.6-km stage had 11 km of flat roads before the very tough climb of Mount Lussari. Almost every comeptitor began with a time trial bike and would change to lighter climbing machines at the foot of Lussari. Roglič was already putting time into Thomas and looked like he may take over the pink jersey on the penultimate day. Then, disaster. The Slovenian dropped his chain and had to get off. The Jumbo-Visma jumped off his Cervélo and fixed his chain, before getting a push to get back going…but he lost crucial time.

Ultimately, he would keep fighting to the finish and put 40 seconds into Thomas, and take the lead by 14 seconds. It was a big win for Roglič given that only three years ago he lost the Tour de France to Tadej Pogačar on a similar stage, just a day before Paris.

“It feels amazing. It’s incredible. My chain dropped but I put it back. I could have lost everything but it’s part of racing,” Roglic said after the race.. “The crowd gave me some extra watts and I was enjoying the atmosphere and the energy around the event. One day to go. The course is a bit technical. It’s not over until it’s over but it looks good.”

On Saturday, Roglič fans put down a metal plaque along the road on the exact spot his chain fell off.

“Na tem mestu se je swift z verige,” the caption reads in Slovenian. “In this place, his chain fell off.”

Roglič’s teammate Jonas Vingegaard is currently racing at the Tour de France to defend his 2022 title, and to give Jumbo-Visma a big Grand Tour double.
