Taylor Phinney takes Tour of California Stage 5 win with solo breakaway

Out of the peloton, 25 km from the finish in Santa Barbara, Calif., Talyor Phinney (U.S.A./BMC) took off ahead of the bunch riding the Amgen Tour of California. The time trial specialist–who has used his TT abilities to great effect at the 2012 Giro d'Italia and at the 2010 under-23 world time trial championships where he was first—rode ahead of the teams who wanted to reel him in. Cannondale and Orica-GreenEdge wanted to place their sprinters for the win.

Out of the peloton, 25 km from the finish in Santa Barbara, Calif., Talyor Phinney (U.S.A./BMC) took off ahead of the bunch riding the Amgen Tour of California. The time trial specialist–who has used his TT abilities to great effect at the 2012 Giro d’Italia and at the 2010 under-23 world time trial championships where he was first—rode ahead of the teams who wanted to reel him in. Cannondale and Orica-GreenEdge wanted to place their sprinters for the win. The American, however, got himself a healthy gap that he kept all the way to the finish line. His move marks the second day at the Tour of California that a breakaway has succeeded.

“To do what I did is kind of one of those things where you get to the finish and you’re like, ‘How did I do that? And why did I do that?'” said Phinney.

Canada’s Will Routley (Optum presented by Kelly Benefit Strategies) made an attack of his own. Before the day’s king of the mountain peak, Routley surged ahead to gain maximum points. He now has 42 KOM points in the Tour. Rohan Dennis (Australia/Garmin-Sharp) is second in the KOM competition at 16 points.
