The first ChatGPT bike is here, for some reason

First, it promised to replace us at our jobs. Then it threatened to end the world. Now A.I. is coming for our fun. Yes, ChatGPT is now, somehow, integrated into a bike.

Urtopia E-Bike claims to have “The World’s First Smartest Ebike with ChatGPT Integration.” Meet the Urtopia X ChatGPT, “the bicycle with a mind.”

Apparently, Mercedes Benz earned the title of first mobility company with A.I., but Urtopia is getting in on the glory with the first ebike.

So, what does integrating A.I. actually do? For now, based on Urtopia’s PR video, it’s basically an overhyped navigation aid. Like a monotone version of the route features already offered by Garmin and Strava. But, you know, with A.I.

The Urtopia X ChatGPT bike will also monitor your HR and vary its e-assist levels based on your effort. Which is sort of like what Liv/Giant do already but, since this is connected to Apple Health and Strava, presumably “smarter.”

But what comes next? A.I. integration isn’t much right now, but with all the electronics and data on bikes these days, there’s so much it could do. Maybe.

Will you be able to ask it to help you win your local office park crit? Could it let you know when to attack based on your HR and power metrics during the race? It’s just e-bikes for now, but what happens when two people show up with a ChatGPT-based race plan? Do the robots duel until one loses battery power or their user just gives up? Or should we start with something less ambitious like it commanding AXS or Di2 to select a better gear based on a rider’s cadence?

What about in real life? Will it give you the best route to help you escape a crime scene? To evade the police? Or even avoid getting hit by people driving reckless A.I. equipped Mercedes and self-driving Teslas? Who knows. For now, it’ll just give you a really boring tour of L.A. Welcome to the future.
