Elite Canadian Champs return to Lac Mégantic

Cycling Canada Cyclisme

Lac Mégantic, Quebec, will once again host the elite and U23 Canadian Road Cycling Championships and Para-cycling championships. The town has twice hosted the Canadian championships in the past, with the Elite/U23 races in 2012 and the Juniors and Masters in 2013.

The region offers some of Canada’s best riding, as evidenced by the highly successful Tour de Beauce. Mont Mégantic is a fixture of the course that demands the most out of every competitor.

“Given how hard the courses will be there is no doubt that the riders crowned as Canadian Champions will truly be the strongest in their field,” said Jacques Landry, High Performance Director for Cycling Canada.

In 2013, the national championships were held nearby in the town of St-Georges.

The town made national news last year after a devastating trail derailment and explosion in the downtown core. In an effort to help the town recover, Cycling Canada Cyclisme combined efforts with the cycling community to jointly raise over $14,000 towards relief efforts.

“Hosting a sporting event of the magnitude of a Canadian Road Cycling Championships can have a significant financial impact to a region, no matter where they are being held,” said Greg Mathieu, CEO of Cycling Canada. “For Cycling Canada to return to Lac-Mégantic is a testament of our ongoing commitment to help in the rebuilding efforts of the cycling-friendly town, a town that has welcomed us for the last two years.”
