There are days when you need new kicks–and there are days when you need new kicks going full gas in a pro bike race.

Dion Smith of Intermarché-Circus-Wanty had to make a show swap during a recent race, and it was certainly an impressive act. Most pros will keep a rain bag in team cars, with some extra clothes and usually a pair of shoes in case something happens. Although it’s rare to have problems with your footwear in a race, a problem with your cleat or sole would be disastrous mid-race.

Smith can be seen holding onto the car, swapping both shoes, one a time. His socked foot is on his Look pedal, as the mechanic hands him his back-ups. He seems to have special insoles, which he also has to insert into his shoes. You can hear him ask the staff member for them as he holds onto the car.
